Last week Walid was able to attend the United Nations Association General Conference in New York City, representing Every Campus A Refuge. While there Walid discussed ECAR at the NGO Open House at Baruch College of the City University of New York, as well as being part of a panel discussing sustainable development goals. Walid was able to attend the General Assembly at the UN where he was able to discuss ECAR and refugee issues further. This was an amazing opportunity for ECAR to be present at and ECAR thanks Walid for representing the program wonderfully.

Every Campus A Refuge (ECAR) is an initiative that mobilizes college and university campus resources (within and without the institution’s physical borders) to provide housing and other forms of assistance to refugees seeking resettlement in the institution’s local area. In partnership with local resettlement agencies, universities and colleges can make a big difference in refugee resettlement in terms of numbers of refugees resettled, quality of resettlement and the shaping of public discourse around refugees and immigrants. The ECAR PPSE minor formalizes the educational components of the initiative and engages students in disciplinary, interdisciplinary and place-based experiences that facilitate: 1) learning about forced displacement and (im)migration 2) centralizing the voices, agency and perspectives of (im)migrants and forcibly displaced individuals 3) participation in the place-based educational processes of resettlement and community building 4) emphasis on the nature and significance of organizing and advocacy. In short, the ECAR PPSE minor will engage the students in learning about the issues of forced displacement, the individuals who experience it, and the methods by which some of its various problems can be addressed.
The various elements of the minor are designed to educate the students on the what/why of forced displacement, (im)migration and refugeeism (the classes they take and the guest lectures they hear); centralize the agency, perspective and individuality of those who experience refugeeism, forced displacement and (im)migration (the classes focused on primary narratives, the ECAR guests they volunteer with, and the conversation partners); how we can collectively address the problems of forced displacement and refugeeism and the resettlement of (im)migrants (classes on organizing, civic engagement and community building); doing the work of principled problem-solving (hosting, resettling, advocacy and the programmatic ECAR projects). Check out more of the specific details and coursework here! On Monday, February 13, Diya Abdo presented at Queens University in Charlotte. It was a joint event with Queens University and UNC Charlotte. Queens University has shown interest in the ECAR program and Diya was able to discuss the ways in which Queens University could make it a viable program on their campus. There were many questions asked regarding the program and ways to implement it. Overall the event was a great success and ECAR wants to thank Queens University for hosting!
Written by Nicole Moore Yesterday February 7, Diya Abdo presented at Duke University as part of their Finding Sanctuary Speaker Series Event. Diya discussed the refugee crisis abroad and the importance of all universities to attempt to find a way to make ECAR fit within their campus. She identified key points of the ECAR program and ways to adapt ECAR to Duke University as well as other college campuses. ECAR thanks Duke University for extending their invitation to ECAR to help get the message out about the importance of the refugee crisis and the ECAR mission.
Written by Nicole Moore On Thursday, February 2, ECAR hosted Chef Kevin Ray Archer for the Peace Meal Supper Club's 17th meal! The dinner's title was 'Sanctuary,' and the theme of the meal was to raise awareness about refugees as well as funds for Every Campus A Refuge and the families it hosts on Guilford's campus. The dinner was a welcoming event as well as an excellent opportunity to support refugees and educate citizens in the Greensboro community! The dinner itself was a huge success with over 30 guests, and ECAR wants to thank all the people who came out and volunteered as well as Chef Kevin Ray Archer and his staff for providing a delicious meal!
